When you are planning your wedding, the application can feel like a formality. Yet even a small mistake may prevent the Danish authorities from assessing your case without asking for more information.
An unclear passport photo, a missing page or a document that does not match the information in your application can interrupt an otherwise straightforward process. Some couples receive approval within days, while others have to spend weeks obtaining new documents or resolving questions. In more complicated cases, this can affect plans made months in advance.
Here are the mistakes to check for before you submit your application.
A photo may look clear on your phone but become difficult to read when opened on a larger screen. Glare can hide a passport number, a finger can cover a date, or the edges of a document may be cut off.
For passport uploads, the Danish Agency of Family Law asks for colour images of every page, including blank pages and the front and back covers. Uploading only the page with your photograph is therefore not enough. If you use an EU national ID card instead, both sides must be included.
Before submitting, open every uploaded file and check that the full document is visible and readable. Good lighting, sharp images and the original image files can help the authorities assess your documents without requesting replacements.
Not every couple needs the same paperwork. If you have lived together abroad, have children together or have been married before, you may need documents that another couple does not.
For example, the authorities may ask for proof of a shared address abroad, birth certificates for children you have together, or documentation showing that a previous marriage has ended. Some documents must be provided in their original language alongside a translation. Requirements for legalisation can also depend on the document and the country that issued it.
A useful approach is to build your document list around both partners’ circumstances before starting the application. That gives you time to obtain anything missing instead of discovering the problem after submission.

Your identity documents and your right to enter and stay in Denmark are separate parts of the application. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to provide a visa, residence permit or other relevant documentation.
Check the requirements that apply to each partner and make sure the evidence is current and legible. Do not assume that uploading a passport alone answers every question about your stay.
It is tempting to submit as soon as the last document arrives. Take a final moment to check that you have attached the right file in the right place, that no pages are missing and that both partners’ details are consistent throughout the application.
Also check that the application has been submitted and the required fee paid. The Agency of Family Law states that it cannot process an application until it has received the fee. A few minutes spent reviewing everything now may prevent a much longer exchange about missing information later.
Submitting an application or receiving confirmation that it was submitted is not the same as being approved to marry. Wait until you have received your approval and certificate of marital status before committing to a wedding date.
You can explore locations and plan a preferred timeframe while your application is being assessed. However, paying for non-refundable travel, accommodation or wedding arrangements before approval carries a risk if the authorities need additional documents or more time to review your case. Your certificate of marital status is generally valid for four months from the date of issue, so the timing of the ceremony matters too.
A careful application cannot guarantee approval within a particular number of days. It can, however, remove many avoidable reasons for delay. Gather the documents relevant to your situation, check every image, compare your details across files and wait for approval before finalising your wedding booking.
