Proof of Relationship in Marriage Application

When preparing your marriage application, you may need to provide information about your relationship. This helps the Danish Agency of Family Law understand how you met, how you stay in contact and how your relationship has developed over time.

Proof of relationship is not necessarily one specific document. It can include photographs, correspondence and other relevant material that supports the information in your application. The aim is to provide a clear and accurate picture of your history together.

Since 1 January 2019, Danish marriage law has explicitly prohibited marriages of convenience. As part of assessing your application, the authorities may ask for information and supporting documentation about your relationship. What you need to provide depends on your circumstances.

What can you include in the application?

Photographs from different occasions and examples of communication can help illustrate your relationship. Choose material that provides context, such as pictures from visits or time spent together, and explain when and where they were taken if this is not obvious.

If you live together outside Denmark, the Agency requires a residence certificate or similar documentation of your shared address. This is separate from personal photographs and messages.

The relevant documentation depends on your circumstances. Read our guide to the required documents for your marriage application for an overview, and follow the instructions that apply to your situation.

Put your relationship in chronological order

A short timeline can help you organise the information before submitting it. Start with when and how you first met, then describe important moments such as meeting in person, visiting each other or moving in together.

If you have spent periods living in different countries, explain those periods clearly and describe how you maintained contact. Your account does not need to be elaborate. A straightforward explanation with relevant dates is more useful than a long, repetitive story.

Check that the details match your supporting material and the answers elsewhere in your application. If you are uncertain about a date, avoid presenting an estimate as an exact fact.

Focus on clear and relevant information

When organising your material, consider what each item adds to the explanation. Several nearly identical photographs or lengthy collections of messages may be harder to navigate than a carefully organised selection.

Make sure text is readable and any explanations are easy to connect to the relevant material. Clear organisation can make your relationship history easier to follow, but it does not guarantee approval or a particular processing time.
