Wedding Process in Denmark

Getting married in Denmark is an increasingly popular choice for couples worldwide due to its streamlined, efficient, and inclusive process.

Known for its minimal bureaucracy and welcoming atmosphere, Denmark has become a go-to destination for couples who value simplicity and speed when planning their special day. You can also find more info about getting married in Denmark here and see the benefits of getting married in Denmark.

A quick step-by-step guide to the wedding process

Step 1: Gather Required Documents

The first step is to collect the necessary documents. Denmark’s requirements are simple and designed to accommodate couples from diverse national and cultural backgrounds. Typically, you’ll need:

  • Valid Identification: A passport or national ID card.
  • Proof of Marital Status: A divorce decree, death certificate of a previous spouse, or a certificate of marital status, if applicable.
  • Documentation of Legal Residence: If one or both partners are not EU citizens, proof of legal residence in the country where you live may be required.
  • Proof of Address: Recent utility bills or official correspondence showing your address may be requested.

Check with the Danish Agency of Family Law or the specific town hall where you plan to marry for any additional requirements based on your circumstances.

Step 2: Submit Your Application

Once your documents are ready, you’ll submit an application to the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset). This agency reviews all marriage applications to ensure compliance with Danish law. The application process involves:

  • Filling out the application form (available online).
  • Uploading or mailing the required documents.
  • Paying a non-refundable processing fee.

The agency typically reviews applications within a few days, making this step fast and efficient.

Step 3: Receive Approval

After reviewing your application, the Danish Agency of Family Law will issue an approval if everything is in order. This approval is valid for four months, giving you flexibility to plan your ceremony.

Step 4: Book Your Ceremony

With your approval in hand, you can book your wedding ceremony. Denmark offers a wide variety of venues, including:

  • Local town halls with charming, historic settings.
  • Stunning outdoor locations, such as beaches or parks.
  • Iconic landmarks like castles and cultural heritage sites.

Ceremonies are performed in Danish or English, and an interpreter can be arranged if needed.

Step 5: Attend the Ceremony

On the day of your wedding, you’ll need to bring:

  • Your original identification documents.
  • Witnesses, if required (most town halls can provide witnesses if you don’t bring your own).

The ceremony is brief and meaningful, and couples are presented with their marriage certificate immediately after.

Step 6: Receive an Internationally Recognized Marriage Certificate

The Danish marriage certificate is issued in multiple languages (usually Danish, English, German, and French) and is recognized worldwide. This makes it easy to register your marriage in your home country or other jurisdictions.

Additional Considerations

  • No Residency Requirement: Denmark’s lack of a residency requirement means couples from any country can marry there without needing to live in Denmark beforehand.
  • Progressive and Inclusive: Denmark welcomes all couples, including same-sex couples, intercultural partnerships, and those from different nationalities.
  • Flexible Timelines: The entire process, from application to ceremony, can be completed in as little as a few weeks, making it ideal for couples who want a quick wedding.

Disadvantages

From here we have explained the advantages of getting married in Denmark, but as in life, not everything is perfect. We think it is honest to also mention the disadvantages of getting married in Denmark.

Below is a list of what we consider to be disadvantages.

  • Denmark could be expensive
  • The weather could be difficult
  • Difficult to find a place to get married in the famous City Hall

Cost in Denmark

As mentioned above, you do not need a lawyer.
You can apply to the Danish authorities yourself, but we strongly recommend that you use a wedding agency. If you decide to use a family lawyer, the experience might be different.
This is not only because the family lawyer could be expensive but also because they do not offer the same experience as the wedding agencies.
Wedding agencies have knowledgeable and caring staff who will give you an amazing experience when you decide to organise your fantastic wedding day.

Weather

It is well known that Denmark is very cold in winter, and the sun does not usually shine. That is why people prefer to visit in spring and summer. However, if you do not have any problems with the coldest days, it is a perfect season to get married there, because the town hall is emptier than in other times.
Our experience tells us that getting married in the coldest seasons can be very romantic. Just imagine how beautiful a snowy day is and how incredible the experience could be, enjoying the amazing silence of the snow.
All you need to do is dress appropriately to enjoy the weather and be ready to taste incredible Danish cookies with a hot cup of coffee or chocolate.

Famous city hall

Denmark offers people who want to get married many places to do it, called city halls. Each city hall offers a completely different experience, some are private, others are available to celebrate weddings every day, some are very popular because of their buildings or probably because the location is in a tourist point. See our locations here.
Each parties have different preferences to live the wedding experience, but from our experience we know that most of the couples desire to get married in Copenhagen City Hall. This is a famous place due to it amazing and oldest building and the ubication is in the city centre.

For this reason, you have to wait about two months to get an appointment because there is so much demand.
But you do not have to despair! as we have said before, there is another beautiful alternative in Denmark, and even you can plan your wedding in a time of the year that is less busy.
